Before You Book

Getting Here & Parking

Stony Batter Historic Reserve is at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, about 40 minutes drive from Matiatia Wharf.

This area is not currently serviced by public transport.

From Onetangi, head up the hill on Waiheke Road. After a couple of kilometres, turn left into Man O’ War Bay Road. Follow this road through farmland then turn left into Stony Batter Road. There is a parking area adjacent to a walkway that crosses private farmland to reach the Stony Batter Historic Reserve.

Please arrive at the Stony Batter car park at least 45 minutes before your tour.

The car park is not located at the tunnels. From here, allow 20–30 minutes to walk along a farm road through open farmland to the Tour Office. Please check in 15 minutes before your scheduled tour.

Tour Duration & Accessibility

Allow approximately 1 hour for your guided tour, plus time for the walk to and from the car park.

The tour involves stairs, uneven surfaces and areas of low lighting. A moderate level of fitness and mobility is required. The underground environment may not be suitable for visitors with claustrophobia or limited mobility.

What to Wear

We recommend comfortable, enclosed walking shoes and a warm layer, as the tunnels can be cool and damp. The walk to the tunnels is exposed, so please dress for the weather.

Children & Families

Children are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult throughout the experience.

Babies are welcome on our tours, but due to stairs, uneven and potentially wet surfaces, prams cannot be taken inside the tunnels.

You're welcome to use a backpack-style baby carrier, provided the combined height of you and the carrier does not exceed 210 cm.
